Delightfully foamy, refreshing, and tangy – this SunnyD Orange Julius smoothie is a must-have dessert beverage for those extra hot days!
This SunnyD Orange Julius recipe is foamy, oh-so refreshing and deliciously tangy. My mom made it for my siblings and I growing up as a dessert smoothie. I had a craving for it this past summer after not having it for years.
Before asking my mom, I wondered if she had invented it or if this was a recipe that was popular back in the day. I Googled ‘Sunny Delight eggs and ice drink’ and to my surprise, I found that it is pretty similar to Dairy Queen’s Orange Julius original.
But when I asked my mom, she said she had simply adapted her Foamy Egg Beer Cocktail recipe from Ecuador for us as kids.
“You couldn’t drink beer but you all did like SunnyD!” GENIUS.
An Orange Julius beverage typically calls for orange juice concentrate, egg whites, sugar, vanilla extract, and ice. However, this recipe skips the concentrate and vanilla, and includes the whole egg. Simple and still delicious!
The key ingredient in this recipe?
SunnyD Tangy Original – an orange-flavored citrus punch (with other natural flavors) that reminds me of innocent sugar-buzzed recesses in elementary school.
Now isn’t that a throwback to simpler times? AH yes, the glory days.
What ingredients are in SunnyD Orange Julius smoothie?
A whopping total of 4 ingredients are needed:
- SunnyD Tangy Original orange punch
- Granulated White Sugar
- One large raw egg
- Ice
Can I substitute SunnyD for orange juice?
SunnyD is a punch which has several types of fruit juices, or in this case, ‘concentrates’ including orange, tangerine, apple, lime, grapefruit & pear. On top of this there are added natural flavors. While the orange concentrate is present in the greatest amount compared to the other fruit concentrates, the flavor is really a mix of citrus sweetness.
So if you substitute it with orange juice, you’ll miss out on the additional delightful fruit flavors that SunnyD provides. That is what makes this smoothie unique – you’re getting all these extra fruit flavors from one source.
Do I really need to add more sugar to my SunnyD Smoothie?
If you want to skip the sugar, then skip the ice. Adding more sugar makes up for the ice diluting the SunnyD flavor once blended.
Of course, if you skip the ice, your smoothie will be thinner in texture but still pretty foamy. Just make sure that the SunnyD is chilled before use.
Do raw eggs and juice mix?
Absolutely.
Egg whites are used in many cocktails to provide texture and mouthfeel. The egg yolk balances the sweetness from SunnyD and sugar, adding a deeper and richer taste to the entire drink.
However there are risks in consuming raw eggs, especially for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, and/or immunocompromised. I highly recommend using pasteurized raw eggs only.
How to Make SunnyD Orange Julius Smoothie
Pour 1 cup of chilled SunnyD into a blender. Add one raw large egg, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, and half a cup of ice. Blend for approximately 1 minute, or until the mix reaches a smooth consistency and the foam begins to build up. Adjust the sugar and punch to taste if needed. Pour into a glass and serve immediately.
